New Orleans in 1910 was a port city whose economy rested on cotton, sugar, coffee and the steamship traffic moving along the Mississippi, with the wharves and warehouses of the riverfront handling goods bound for markets across the country and abroad. The city's population had grown past a quarter million by the 1910 census, and it was a place where French, Creole, Anglo-American and African American communities shaped its streets, churches and social clubs. Mardi Gras was already a deep civic tradition, with krewes organizing parades, floats and balls that drew crowds from the French Quarter to the uptown avenues. Those parades were understood locally as the season's great public spectacle, often tied to fraternal societies and to debates over who controlled the city's festive life. A photograph of the celebration would have shown New Orleanians a view they recognized as their own city at its most theatrical.
