New Orleans in 1910 was a busy Gulf port, with cotton, sugar, and fruit moving across its wharves on the Mississippi River and a population of roughly 340,000. By then Carnival had been run by social clubs called krewes for decades, and the Mardi Gras parades that wound through the streets each February drew crowds from the French Quarter and the uptown neighborhoods alike. The Rex organization, founded in 1872, staged its daytime procession on Mardi Gras itself, while masked balls remained central to the season for the city's white elite. Jim Crow rules shaped daily life across the city, and Black New Orleanians often watched the parades from the margins, even as they contributed much of the labor that kept the port running.
