In 1910, the prairie parishes around Crowley and Jennings in southwest Louisiana were in the middle of a rice boom. The crop had only taken hold a generation earlier, after Abe Hoffpauir brought Honduras rice to Vermilion Parish in the mid-1880s, and farmers had since learned to flood their fields with water from artesian wells. Railroad towns along the Southern Pacific line shipped the harvest to mills, and Crowley promoted itself as a rice center. Panoramic views of these flat fields, with their levees and irrigation ditches, showed residents how far the industry had reshaped the landscape.
