Louisiana in 1910 still ran largely on sugar, cotton, rice, and timber, and the port of New Orleans handled much of the cotton and sugar leaving the state. Dairying was a smaller enterprise, usually run on family farms that sold fresh milk and butter to nearby towns and to city buyers, though refrigeration and rail links were still limited. Most residents lived in the countryside, and farm households relied on a mix of crops and livestock to get through the year. Oil was beginning to reshape parts of the northwest after the 1905 Caddo Parish discovery, but for most Louisianians, life on a farm like this was measured by the seasons, the milk route, and the trip to the nearest market town.
