Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1910 was the commercial center of the state's northwest corner, a river town on the Red River whose economy rested on cotton, lumber, and the oil and gas that had been found in the region's Caddo Lake and Caddo Parish fields. The city had grown rapidly after railroads connected it to Texas, Arkansas, and markets to the east, and its wholesale houses and sawmills drew workers and merchants from across the Ark-La-Tex border country. Downtown streets were lined with brick commercial blocks, and the city was home to a sizable population of Black residents and a growing middle class of professionals and merchants. Photographers working for the Haines firm, which specialized in city views across the country, documented such towns as proof of civic pride and expansion during this prosperous decade.
