Shreveport in 1910 was a city of roughly 28,000 people on the Red River, named for Henry Miller Shreve, the steamboat captain who cleared the Great Raft that had long blocked the river's channel. By then steamboat traffic was fading on much of the river, and the rail yards and electric streetcar lines were becoming the main way residents and goods moved within and beyond the city. Local politics centered on the city council and the parish courthouse, where officials argued over paving, water service, and public schools. Those who lived there would have known Shreveport as the commercial anchor of the state's northwest corner, a place where growth in its neighborhoods was visible from one decade to the next.
