Tulane's uptown campus in 1910 sat alongside Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, the women's college Tulane opened in 1887, which by then offered its own courses and was building a reputation for art and design. In 1910 the medical school faced close scrutiny after Abraham Flexner's national report on medical education, which judged many American schools, including several in the South, too weak in laboratory science. Across the city, New Orleans counted roughly 340,000 residents in the 1910 census, and streetcar lines carried students and families between the university and downtown. Most people in town would have known the university mainly through its law and medical students and through the Newcomb women who studied there.
