Winter Louisiana scenery from 1910 records the working countryside of the Gulf South during a year of heavy timbering and seasonal sugar work. The lumber boom was then at its height, drawing out-of-state companies into the pine forests of central and western Louisiana, where mill towns and logging railroads reshaped the land within a generation. Along the bayous and in the sugar parishes, winter meant the grinding season, when cane cut in the fall was crushed at mills that ran day and night. Sugar, rice, cotton, and timber linked farm communities to the port of New Orleans, while state politics remained under the white Democratic establishment that had written a new constitution in 1898 to restrict Black voting.
