New Orleans in 1910 was one of the busiest ports in the country, with steamships along the Mississippi loading cotton, sugar, and bananas bound for markets across the Gulf and the North. The city had roughly 340,000 residents, many working on the levee, in cotton warehouses, and in the sugar and rice trades that spread across south Louisiana. Carnival set the city's social calendar, and krewes such as Rex and Comus staged masked balls and street parades in the weeks before Lent, drawing crowds from every neighborhood. This picture shows the Mardi Gras festivities of that year, when the parades were a source of civic pride and a reminder of the city's French and Creole traditions, even as Jim Crow laws shaped who could watch from the curbs and who could ride on the floats.
