Louisiana in 1910 was a state whose economy still rested largely on the land and the water. Sugar cane dominated the lower Mississippi and Bayou country, with grinding season running through the cold months, while rice farming had taken hold on the prairies of the southwest. Lumber mills in the pine parishes of the north and central parts of the state were cutting heavily, and the oil boom that had started at Jennings in 1901 was drawing new workers and capital to the southwest. The state held roughly 1.6 million residents, and many rural families still measured the year by the planting and harvesting seasons. A winter scene in Louisiana would have looked familiar to people who knew the mild, wet season of bare fields, cypress along the water, and work that never fully stopped.
