Shreveport in 1916 was still a Red River railroad city, and farmers and cotton factors across the region were watching the boll weevil move through the cotton fields. Tensions along the Mexican border that year put Louisiana National Guard units on alert, and the city's rail connections to Texas and points west made it a useful staging point for news and freight. Merchants on Texas Street and Milam Street kept their doors open for customers arriving by train, while churches and fraternal lodges shaped much of daily social life. Residents would have known Shreveport as the largest city in northwest Louisiana, a place that depended more on its railroads than on the river to move goods.
