New Orleans in 1913 was a major Gulf port, shipping cotton, sugar, and lumber from its wharves along the Mississippi River, and the 1910 census had counted about 339,000 residents. The Rex parade, staged each Mardi Gras by a secret social club of prominent local men first organized in 1872, was the centerpiece of the Carnival season, when business slowed and the city crowded into its streets. Floats built around a yearly theme rolled through the uptown avenues, and the krewe's king and court were the season's most visible figures. Residents knew the parade as a local ritual that drew visitors from across Louisiana and the Gulf South. This picture shows the crowds lining St. Charles Avenue along the route.
