Lake Charles, the seat of Calcasieu Parish in southwestern Louisiana, was a timber and rice town in 1910, with sawmills along the Calcasieu River and rice fields spreading across the prairie to the west. Railroad lines had tied the town to Houston and New Orleans and to shipping, and its population had grown quickly as lumber companies and land promoters drew settlers from other parts of the country. The fire that year destroyed much of the downtown business district, and the rebuilding that followed was a source of civic pride and debate among merchants and city officials. This view records the burned blocks in the months after the blaze, when residents were clearing debris and deciding how the commercial center would be rebuilt. For the people who lived there, the scene marked a hard turn in a town that had been expanding fast.
