Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 1923 was a city feeling the effects of the oil and sulphur development reshaping southwest Louisiana after the First World War. Drilling crews and prospectors were moving through Calcasieu Parish, and sulphur mining at nearby Sulphur drew rail traffic and shipments through the city's port. Downtown streets were filling with hotels, offices and new businesses serving the men who came to work the fields, while the ship channel to the Gulf kept the waterfront busy. Residents knew Lake Charles as a gateway for this new commerce, not only for the timber and rice trade of earlier decades. A. L. Barnett's panorama captures the city's built-up core at a moment of rapid change.
