Crowley in 1921 was home to many Acadian and Creole families, and French was still spoken on its streets and in its kitchens. The Catholic parishes anchored social life, with church feasts, dances, and family gatherings marking the calendar alongside the seasons of planting and harvest. Across Louisiana, Governor John M. Parker's administration was pushing a good roads program, so residents of the prairie parishes watched closely for gravel and paved routes that would link their farms to markets beyond the rail depot. For many townspeople, Crowley was a place where neighbors knew one another by family name, and a new road could mean nearly as much as a new train line.
