Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 1895 was a small southwest Louisiana town that had grown up around the Calcasieu River and the lake for which it was named. Lumber was the driving force of the local economy, as sawmills along the Calcasieu shipped pine lumber downriver and out through the Gulf, and the town's population had been rising as the timber trade drew workers and families to the area. Rice farming and cattle raising were also important in the surrounding parishes, and rail connections were slowly linking the town to markets beyond the bayou country. This view of the town by photographer F. E. Derr shows the riverfront and the built-up streets that served this young, busy community.
