Crowley, Louisiana, in 1921 was a railroad and rice town in Acadia Parish, built up after the Southern Pacific line reached the prairie in the 1880s. Midwestern settlers who came to farm the flat land had turned it into one of the state's leading rice districts, and mills, warehouses, and railroad sidings shaped daily life. The 1920s brought a sharp fall in farm prices after the First World War, so townspeople in 1921 would have felt the squeeze on their crops and credit closely. Many of them still spoke of Crowley first as a rice town, a place where the harvest and the trains set the rhythm of the year.
