Bull Bayou Field, Louisiana, photographed in 1921, sits in the flat coastal prairie of southwest Louisiana, a region whose economy in those years rested mainly on rice, cattle, and the lumber and oil that were reshaping the parishes around Lake Charles. Rice had become a major cash crop there after the 1880s, when railroads and new irrigation methods made large-scale planting practical, and by the early 1920s the area's farms depended on mills and rail lines to move the harvest to market. The decade also brought rapid change to the region, as the oil discoveries that followed the 1901 Spindletop strike in Texas drew workers, capital, and new towns into the surrounding parishes. For the people who lived near Bull Bayou, the land meant crops, cattle, and the seasonal work of a farming community.
