Schofield Barracks, on the Leilehua plateau in central Oahu, was the home of the 11th Field Artillery Brigade in 1921. The post was named for Gen. John M. Schofield and built after the Army expanded its presence in the islands following annexation in 1898. Hawaii's economy still rested largely on sugar plantations, with pineapple growing across the islands, and Honolulu's harbor and the naval station at Pearl Harbor drew steady military and commercial traffic. Plantation labor was made up largely of workers of Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, and Filipino descent, so the soldiers stationed among them joined a community that was growing more crowded and more mixed than it had been a generation earlier.
