Kilauea, on the island of Hawaii, was a major draw for visitors in 1912, when the Territory of Hawaii was about a dozen years old and its economy rested mainly on sugar and, increasingly, pineapple. Most travelers reached the volcano from Hilo, the island's main port, by carriage or horseback over a rough road, and the Volcano House hotel on the crater rim gave them a base for viewing Halemaumau, the pit crater whose glowing lava lake had been active off and on since 1911. That same period saw scientists take growing interest in the volcano's behavior, and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory was founded in 1912 to study it. Residents of Hilo and Honolulu knew Kilauea as a national-scale spectacle as well as a local landmark, and the crater was already a stop on tours of the islands.
