Haleiwa Hotel, on the North Shore of Oahu, was a fashionable seaside resort in 1902, drawing visitors from Honolulu and beyond. The Oahu Railway and Land Company, headed by Benjamin Dillingham, ran the line along the island's northern coast and owned the hotel, so guests could reach it in a day rather than by a long overland ride. Hawaii had been annexed by the United States in 1898 and organized as a territory in 1900, and Honolulu remained its commercial center, where sugar, shipping and the harbor generated most of the money. Guests came for ocean bathing, surfing and rest on the verandas, while nearby cane fields reminded them that plantation agriculture underpinned the islands' economy.
