Honolulu in 1902 was the busy port of a territory that had been under United States control only since the 1898 annexation, and it was still adjusting to that change. Sugar plantations drove the islands' economy, and the wharves and the Oahu Railway moved crops and supplies through the city. The Hawaiian Hotel, a long-standing establishment on Fort Street, served steamship passengers, merchants and visitors arriving from San Francisco. Its guests stepped out into a commercial district where Native Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese and American residents worked and shopped side by side. Locals still remembered the January 1900 fire that burned part of Chinatown after plague was found there, and the rebuilding that followed.
