Hawaii in 1902 was a United States territory, annexed in 1898 and organized as a territory in 1900, and its economy rested largely on sugar plantations spread across the fertile lowlands of the islands. Plantations recruited workers from Japan, Portugal, China, and the Philippines, so the population was mixed and growing. Honolulu, the territorial capital, was still recovering from the bubonic plague outbreak of 1899 and 1900, which led to the burning of much of Chinatown in January 1900. Thatched houses of pili grass, called hale pili in Hawaiian, had become far less common than frame houses with metal roofs, but many rural families still kept them for sleeping, cooking, or storage. To residents, such a house recalled the islands' life before foreign trade and mission schooling reshaped daily habits.
