Volcano House on the Island of Hawaii sat in 1902 in a territory only a couple of years into American rule. Most islanders worked at lower elevations, in cane fields and mills where Japanese, Portuguese and Chinese laborers made up much of the workforce, and the wet Hilo side was known for rain on many days of the year. The hotel depended on a long, steep road through ohia forest and open pasture, and its horses and supplies had to make the climb from the coast. Hilo residents tended to treat the crater as a spectacle to show visitors, though those who lived nearby talked about its moods like those of a neighbor.
