Volcano House sat on the rim of Kilauea crater on the island of Hawaii in 1912, when the Territory of Hawaii was still a U.S. territory and not yet a state. Visitors reached the hotel by road from Hilo, the island's main port, where sugar shipments and the sugar plantations that dominated the local economy shaped daily life. The crater was then the island's best-known attraction, and the hotel depended on tourists who came to see its active lava lake and steam vents. That same year, the crater's activity drew the attention of scientists, and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory was established nearby to study it. People on the island knew Volcano House as the gateway to one of the most visited natural wonders in the Pacific.
