The Pali, on the northeastern edge of Oahu, is where the Nuuanu Valley road from Honolulu climbs to a cliff overlooking the windward coast, and in 1902 it was one of the island's best-known sights. Visitors arrived by carriage or on horseback, since the automobile had not yet reached the island in numbers. The Hawaiian Islands had been annexed by the United States in 1898 and organized as a territory in 1900, and Honolulu's economy still depended largely on sugar plantations and the shipping that carried their crops from the harbor. The Pali was also tied to the island's past: in 1795, King Kamehameha I's forces are said to have driven defenders of Oahu over these cliffs during the Battle of Nuuanu.
