In 1902, Volcano House stood on the rim of Kilauea, on the Island of Hawaii, about thirty miles from the port town of Hilo. The Hawaiian Islands had been annexed by the United States in 1898, and the territory was organized in 1900, so the island's economy still rested mainly on sugar plantations along the coast and on the trade that moved through Hilo's harbor. The hotel served a different trade, catering to travelers who came inland by horse and carriage to look down into the caldera and the glowing pit of Halemaumau. Visitors and residents alike knew the place for its active volcano, and the hotel's guest books recorded a steady stream of tourists from the mainland and abroad.
