Honolulu Harbor in 1910 was the busiest working waterfront in the Territory of Hawaii, which had been organized as a U.S. territory in 1900. Sugar was the dominant industry across the islands, and the port handled raw sugar bound for the mainland, along with pineapple, incoming freight, and the steamships of the Oceanic and Matson lines that linked the islands to San Francisco. Honolulu's population had grown quickly as plantation laborers arrived from Japan, China, Portugal, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines, making the waterfront a meeting point of many languages. Piers, warehouses, and the harbor's coral reef entrance were central to daily life, since nearly everything the islands consumed or sold moved across the water.
