Honolulu in 1910 was the commercial center of the Territory of Hawaii, which had been a U.S. territory since 1900 and was still shaped by its sugar plantations, whose products moved through the harbor to mainland markets. The city's port handled a steady flow of ships carrying sugar, pineapple, and passengers, and the waterfront and downtown streets were busy with merchants, dockworkers, and plantation families coming to town. Electric streetcars had been running through the city for over a decade, and the population was a mix of Native Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Filipino, and American residents. Residents of the time would have known Honolulu as the gateway between the islands and the wider Pacific world.
