Tarpon Springs, on Florida's Gulf Coast, was a sponge-fishing town in 1921, and Spring Bayou, the spring-fed inlet that gave the town its waterfront, was the center of that trade. Greek immigrants, many of them experienced divers and sponge handlers, had built the industry over the preceding two decades, and their boats, docks, and curing sheds lined the water. The town's economy also depended on its railroad connection and on tourists drawn to the mild winters and clear springs. Residents of the period knew Tarpon Springs as a sponge port with a distinctive Greek community, a place where the work of the bayou shaped daily life as much as the weather did.
