Silver Springs, in Marion County, Florida, was in 1911 a spring-fed attraction a few miles from Ocala, the county seat. The spring pours a large volume of clear water into the Silver River, which flows north toward the Ocklawaha River, and steamboats once carried passengers and freight along that route. Marion County's economy in the early 1900s relied on phosphate mining, lumber, and farming, and the railroads serving Ocala linked those products to markets far beyond Florida. Visitors who came to see the spring's remarkable clarity were already becoming part of the local trade that made the site known across the state.
