Sulphur Springs, on the northeast edge of Tampa, took its name from a warm, sulfur-scented spring that drew visitors to the Hillsborough River well before the city grew out to meet it. By 1909 it was a popular resort, reached by the electric streetcar line that carried Tampans out from downtown on weekends. The wider city ran on cigar manufacturing in Ybor City and West Tampa, phosphate shipped through its port, and the railroads that converged there. Residents would have known Sulphur Springs as a place for bathing, picnics and excursions, a break from the factory floors and docks where most working people spent their days.
