In 1914 Tampa's waterfront was the departure point for a novelty that drew crowds from both sides of Hillsborough Bay. On January 1 the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line began carrying paying passengers across the water in a flying boat piloted by Tony Jannus, and the first fare went to Abram C. Pheil, a former mayor of St. Petersburg. The short flight turned a steamer trip of hours into a matter of minutes, and residents on both shores treated it as a sign of how quickly the age was changing. Within months, the war that had broken out in Europe that summer began to disrupt the Atlantic trade on which the port depended, and the airline's future grew uncertain.
