Tampa in 1913 was a growing port city spread across low, sandy ground around Hillsborough Bay, and its electric streetcars carried residents between downtown and the outlying neighborhoods. Electric cars had largely replaced the older mule-drawn lines on the main avenues, a change that townspeople would have noticed on every trip across the city. Citrus growers in the surrounding county shipped fruit north by rail, and the lines running into town brought crates of oranges and winter vegetables down to the docks for steamers. The panorama shows a downtown still modest in height, where church spires and the masts of coastal vessels rose above the rooftops, the skyline of a working harbor.
