In 1913 Tampa, Florida, was a river town of wooden and brick buildings rising above the Hillsborough River, and its growth depended heavily on the railroads and freight yards along the waterfront. The Atlantic Coast Line and the Seaboard Air Line both served the city, and their tracks ran close to the docks where goods moved between the Gulf and the interior. Lumber from the surrounding pine forests was an important part of local trade, and sawmills in the region sent boards and timber into town by rail. Residents of the period would have measured their city by its trains, its wharves, and the steady arrival of new families looking for work in its yards and mills. The view shows a town still low and open, where the river and the rail lines shaped daily life more than any single building.
