Baton Rouge in 1911 was the Louisiana state capital and a working river town on the east bank of the Mississippi, where cargo moved by steamboat, barge, and rail. Sugar, cotton, and lumber from the surrounding parishes passed through its wharves, and the city's economy was still shaped by agriculture. The Standard Oil refinery, which opened in 1909, had begun to show that petroleum would become a major industry there. Louisiana State University also held its campus in the city, so students and professors were familiar figures downtown. A warship at the river front in this photograph reminds viewers that the Mississippi carried naval traffic as well as commerce, and that Baton Rouge was a place where that river traffic was noticed.
