This tall color lithograph, roughly 214 by 101 centimeters, advertised a stage production called *The Queen of Chinatown* and was printed in 1899 by the Strobridge Litho Company of Cincinnati and New York, a firm known for theatrical and circus posters. Its caption, "Simply carrying out an old Irish custom!", sets a playful tone that contrasts with the exotic setting. Late nineteenth-century American stage works often used urban Chinatowns as backdrops, and posters like this one relied on bold color and eye-catching figures to draw crowds. Viewers today may also notice how such images reflect the stereotypes of their era.
