J.H. La Pearl's poster advertises a "combination," the term for a traveling troupe that carried its own cast and repertoire from town to town, often playing local opera houses. Its billing, "sure hits, moral, refined and up to date," was a common promise in 1900, when theatergoers in small communities wanted wholesome entertainment. Printed in color lithography by Russell-Morgan of Cincinnati and New York, the sheet is entirely typographic, with no pictures, so its appeal rests on bold lettering and the claims of its wording.
