The line printed beneath the scene, "Please don't take him away, Mr. Soldier!", points to the emotional core of this 1900 poster for *Siberia*, a melodrama by the American playwright Bartley Campbell (1843–1884). The play belongs to the popular stage tradition of exile dramas, in which a sympathetic figure is torn from home and family and sent to the harsh penal settlements of Siberia, and audiences responded strongly to such stories of injustice and suffering. The poster was printed by the Russell-Morgan Print Company of Cincinnati and New York, which produced theatrical advertising for touring productions, and its bold black-and-white lithography shows how such shows were sold through sentimental, dramatic imagery.
