Set in Tennessee and named for a pine-covered ridge, *At Piney Ridge* is a romantic drama whose poster shows pines and tree limbs framing the scene. Its playwright, David Higgins, was born in 1858 and also used the name David Knowles. The color lithograph was produced in 1897 by the Strobridge Lithographing Company, a Cincinnati firm that printed many theatrical and circus posters in the late nineteenth century. Rural melodramas with Southern or mountain settings were a popular touring theater genre then, and posters like this one were meant to catch the eye of passersby and draw audiences into local opera houses.
