The caption on this 1898 lithograph calls the hiding place "a safe depository for nihilist letters," which sets it apart from the many melodrama posters that rely on snowy landscapes alone. The play, *Lost in Siberia*, drew on public fascination with the tsarist penal system, in which political dissidents were exiled to remote Siberian settlements. "Nihilist" was the term Western audiences used for Russian revolutionaries who opposed the autocracy, and secret correspondence smuggled past guards and censors was a common stage device. The poster was printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York, one of the busiest American firms producing color posters at the time.
