A Tammany Tiger casts the political machine's famous emblem as the central figure of a stage melodrama. The tiger became Tammany Hall's symbol in the 1870s, when Thomas Nast's cartoons in *Harper's Weekly* used the animal to represent the Democratic organization's grip on New York City politics. Henry Grattan Donnelly, a playwright and actor, wrote the piece, and this 1896 color lithograph from the Strobridge Lithographing Company advertised it to audiences. The subject tags point to the play's themes of municipal corruption and the dandy character type, both familiar targets of the period's stage and press.
