Its caption, "A touching trio. The night before election. The last deal.", points to a story set around an election-night backroom bargain, which sets it apart from the many theatrical sheets that simply showed a star. H. Grattan Donnelly, an American designer who drew many theatrical posters, created the design, and the Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York printed it in color for the theatrical producer Jacob Litt. Tall chromolithographs like this one, nearly seven feet high, were a main way touring shows advertised in the 1890s, and they were meant to catch the eye of passersby on busy streets.
