The record names Hoyt's *A Contented Woman*, a comedy by the American playwright Charles Hale Hoyt (1859-1900), whose farces were popular on the stage in the late 1890s. This 1898 poster was lithographed in black and white by the U.S. Printing Co. of Cincinnati, with the Russell-Morgan Print credited, and its caption, "The reform committee," points to a scene or group of characters from the show. Theater posters of this era were built to catch the eye of passersby, so their bold lettering and crowded figures show how touring productions were advertised to American audiences before film.
