The caption places this lithograph on the night before an election, when a city committee serenades the voters it still hopes to win over, and the crowd and wagon bring that street-level politics onto the poster. Printed in 1899 by the Russell-Morgan firm of Cincinnati, a center of American theatrical lithography, it advertises Charles Hale Hoyt's *A Contented Woman*, one of the topical farces Hoyt wrote to poke fun at public life. Viewers may also notice the subject heading on African American performance, a reminder that stage comedy of the period often leaned on caricature.
