This poster advertises *A Milk White Flag*, a farce by Charles Hale Hoyt, one of the most popular American playwrights of the late nineteenth century, and its bold color lithography shows the commercial art of the period. It was printed by the Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati and New York for the theatrical managers Hoyt & McKee. The caption, "The funeral procession is licking the band," signals the broad, comic tone of Hoyt's work, which made him a favorite of touring companies. The poster was later displayed in the Library of Congress exhibition *American Treasures*, held in 2003 and 2004.
