Here the comedian William Keller Mack appears as Jonah, the biblical figure whose name has long been shorthand for bad luck aboard ship. The poster advertises Hoyts theater in New York, where Charles Hale Hoyt's *A Brass Monkey*, a satire on superstition, was staged. Hoyt was known for lighthearted farces that poked fun at American manners, and he died in 1900, the year this sheet was printed. The lithograph came from the Russell-Morgan Print Company of Cincinnati and New York, a firm that produced many theatrical posters of the period.
