Billing a dwarf troupe alongside "the largest man in the world" and "the tallest man, woman and horse in the world," this 1900 lithograph promises the kind of physical contrast that drew crowds to the variety stage. The Royal Lilliputians, a company of little people, toured American theaters in the late 1800s and early 1900s with comedies and musical acts, and the military uniforms shown suggest a costumed, burlesque-style production. Russell-Morgan, a printing firm with offices in Cincinnati and New York, produced large black-and-white sheets like this one to advertise touring shows, and their sensational claims reflect how such performances relied on spectacle and exaggerated physical difference.
