Its caption, "When do I eat? Your high nobility!", sets the tone: a poster for a melodrama of Russian peasant life, where a humble figure bows before aristocrats and ropes appear among the stage business. The Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York printed many theatrical posters like this in the late 1890s, when touring melodramas about exile and hardship were popular across American stages. Siberia, a place of penal exile in the Russian imagination, offered audiences a distant and dramatic setting. The print shows how such posters combined bold color with a sketch of the plot to draw crowds.
