A "grand combination" concert of Swiss bell ringers and Continental vocalists, announced as repeating that night, is the particular attraction here. Swiss handbell ensembles, which played tuned bells in precise sequences, were a popular touring novelty in mid-nineteenth-century America, and they were often paired with singers to fill out an evening's program. This black-and-white lithograph was produced in 1850 by Clarry & Reilly, a New York firm of printers, designers and engravers that made theatrical and entertainment bills of this kind. Its large type and boxed layout show how promoters used striking typography to draw crowds to a single night's show.
